This one was surprisingly easy, actually.
This is from a piece of Torchwood fic, and is the best explanation I have ever seen for why the Doctor feels as he does about both weapons and "spoilers".
And when I say "a piece of fic", I of course mean a very lengthy series of not-short fics. This specific quote is found in part four of the tenth story, "There Are Some Men Who Should Have Mountains To Bear Their Names to Time", from the series I had No Idea I had Been Travelling by
rm and
kalichan. It's Jack/Ianto, in the main, and runs the gamut of their relationship from love to hate and from sweet to really really not sweet at all. The authors beautifully captured the dynamic of two damaged people circling round each other, with their broken edges occasionally rubbing them raw, and sometimes fitting together in a beautiful whole.
And this is really Torchwood at it's best-- the Torchwood that isn't the "adult" Doctor Who (as I have sometimes, confusingly, heard it called), but the Torchwood that shines a light on the harsh and sometimes cruel edges that exist beneath Doctor Who.

"If you've got a gun in your hand, you have only two choices. Fire? Or not? Weapons are like that. They narrow things down. There are other options, Ianto. A whole world of possibilities in every moment. It's like telling Jack about all this, giving away spoilers. If he knew, he'd be trapped, a prisoner. Down to only two choices every time -- going along with it, or trying desperately not to. Doesn't that seem small to you? Wouldn't it ruin it all?"
