sumeria: We who fly must know our place (Lulu & Knight of Zero)
So, for today, I am to pick something with an alternate timeline, which I take to be fic set in the same universe as canon, but where something has alterned that universe. I was tempted to pick [livejournal.com profile] psiten's "The Butterfly Effect", but then I'd be all tempted to discuss what the key event diverging the timeline from canon was, and that hasn't been revealed yet, and it would be a betrayal of my sacred oath as a beta, and so I can't.

So instead... )

Wow. I fail so hard...

I totally forgot all about this meme all weekend. In my defense, it was because I was marathoning Vampire Diaries with [livejournal.com profile] psiten, who hadn't seen it before, making it totally in a worthy cause? And yet still. Even adorable pouty psychotic vampires should not so distract me from my course of action. I am shamed.

So, for... last Friday's entry... I was supposed to do a time travel fic. Being that I read crap tons of Doctor Who fic, that is, of course, pretty easy to find. I did think about taking the time to scare up the link to something less obvious, but my clock informs me that I have only ten minutes left before I am even more days late on this, so I will just go with my first instinct.

This took me a while to decide upon-- I don't really read song fic. So I sat down, and scrolled through my delicious bookmarks that I'd tagged as awesome, looking for anything that had anything to do with a song. And I found something! This is the very first piece of Naruto fic that I ever read, Love Songs and Ladies by [livejournal.com profile] maldoror_gw. It's SasuNaru, and it's old school; written before Sasuke ran off with Orochimaru. It is short and charming and in every way delightful.

This one was surprisingly easy, actually.

This is from a piece of Torchwood fic, and is the best explanation I have ever seen for why the Doctor feels as he does about both weapons and "spoilers".

"If you've got a gun in your hand, you have only two choices. Fire? Or not? Weapons are like that. They narrow things down. There are other options, Ianto. A whole world of possibilities in every moment. It's like telling Jack about all this, giving away spoilers. If he knew, he'd be trapped, a prisoner. Down to only two choices every time -- going along with it, or trying desperately not to. Doesn't that seem small to you? Wouldn't it ruin it all?"

So, today's topic actually presents me with a bit of a conundrum. I remember phrases that I like; they stick with me very strongly. I am entirely certain that there are dozens of fics I've read with lines I found very memorable which I could use for today's entry. The problem is, I only remember things that I store in my memory upon specific prompt. If a topic tangential to a memorable phrase arose, I'd think of the quote. But with a prompt this general, I'm afraid I've been coming up blank.

Most really common fanfic tropes (such as, for example, the blanket scenario) I have a tag for in my delicious bookmarks, but 'amnesia' is one that I don't, so I had to spend quite some time scrolling through looking for fics that I thought I remembered the issue arising in. I had initially planned on using one of the (legion) Doctor Who fics that added Rose to the events of Human Nature, since memory loss is a plot element in almost all of them, but I eventually decided against.

This fic is A Theory of Two Centers by [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller, one of the first Torchwood fics I ever read, actually. Manages to be both in character and very sweet, as well as plotty. I read this fic way before I had actually finished watching the series, and it's the fic that first made the Jack/Ianto pairing seem plausible to me as a relationship, rather than just a casual sex thing. Altogether excellent.

Okay, I didn't so much "forget" to post yesterday as "not remember until 10:30", at which point I decided to do my taxes instead. Mea culpa.

So, for anyone reading this who somehow managed to avoid knowing, a "blanket scenario" is a fic wherein Character A and Character B get trapped in a cabin in a blizzard, where they must share the (one) blanket available Lest They Die. It's a silly trope, but a popular one, and if I am not mistaken (and I'm pretty darned sure I'm not) it was born on an Aoshi/Misao fanfic mailing list about fifteen-ish years ago, quickly spreading throughout the Kenshin fandom, and thence, the rest of the internet.

This one was tricky mostly in that I spent a while trying to decide what my "kink" was. I debated sundry pr0ny things for a while, but decided against. For lo, when I contemplated it, it was clear to me what my true weakness was; the thing I'm most likely to seek out in fiction of all kinds, and the thing most likely to make me pick up a given work.

Ah ha! At last, another easy one. I have a crap ton of fics that would generally be considered "angsty" bookmarked, but I myself don't tend to call it "angst" if there's any light at the end of the tunnel, if you follow. With that understood, I strongly recommend against reading this fic if you have a low tolerance for not even remotely happy endings. Behind Closed Doors is Doctor Who fic of the Rose/Ten II variety. It is not one of those fics where the two of them are all bitter and alone because they never worked things out after Ten dumped, them; I have pretty much no tolerance for those. It does start out that way, but if it ended that way, I strongly suspect that in addition to being a much worse story, it would also feel quite a bit less like a fist to the gut.

Corellary to the above warning: if you do tolerate, and especially if you happen to like fic of this sort, this one is excellent indeed, and you should read it.

Well, with today's subject matter, it's really more a matter of culling from a multitude of options, and then deciding which I'm not completely embarrassed to admit to reading. (shame: I occasionally has it).

I have two fics here, actually, largely because slash pr0n and het pr0n give me really different vibes, in general, and I couldn't decide which of the two I wanted to go with, so. Since, as previously established, I hate decisions, I naturally decided to do one of each. At that, neither is really a "pure" PWP, as both are technically multipart fics. To which I say: bah, whatever.

When I contemplated today's prompt, two fics lept immediately to mind, and after much thought, I couldn't eliminate either of them. So, since restraint has not been the hallmark of anything I've been doing here, have both:

I don't, in general, read fic this short. And everything I thought of turned out to be too long. So, here I present the only fic under a thousand words that I found memorable enough to bookmark and which I also tagged as being really good. Gone People Watching by [livejournal.com profile] metisket. This is a short little D.Grey-man fic from Lavi's POV, and it is very cheerful. Also, the bleakest thing I've ever seen in re: him. It helps that it's tone is so cheerful day-to-day.

Well, this choice was actually pretty easy. I do love me epic fic-- the longer the better, really, because I read very quickly, and so, I really do need several hundred thousand words for something to last longer than an afternoon. So I collect epic fics, in every fandom where I can. That said, I knew immediately want I wanted to pick as soon as I saw today's prompt.

Hrm. Looking at that prompt, two fics leap immediately and clearly into my mind, and I find I just can't choose between them. Given that I had four fics in my "all time favorite" list, I suppose I can allow myself two here. Both slash, but I think that's because well-nigh every fandom where I ship something het is either *incredibly* fluffy (I'm looking at you, Rose and The Doctor) or something I was more into a few years back, otherwise known as "where where those links again?", so, yeah.

Well, at last one that I can't really claim was a challenge. I mean, I still spent (far too much) time thinking about it, but that's just because I was sorting through bookmarks trying to decide what constituted "a good romance". Then I spake unto myself and said, "self, ninety percent of your saved fic is shippy-- just pick your favorite thing that is sweet and charming and involves hooking up and which is not already earmarked for a later day of this endeavor". That seemed a sensible plan-- too sensible, really, but I am running out of "today" because I spent all day reading fanfic.

To Have and Not to Hold, by mtemplar, is an amazing piece of Doctor Who fic. (Ten/Rose, specifically.) As is not atypical of fic I like, it's a giant bundle of h/c with a certain element of aliens-made-them-do-it, but whatever. I love this fic, and highly reccomend it.

I had more to say, but I'm so exhausted that my vision is bluring, so, you will just have to imagine my highly articulate further commentary on this subject.

Hoh. This one is tricky in the good way-- specifically, in that I have a very hard time picking just one. Probably my answer to this would be "Drop Dead Gorgeous", a piece of Harry Potter fic that you will notice I have not linked to. This is because its author removed it from the internet when she became a Real Published Author. But it was awesome.

So, since I can't use that, I shall Refuse to Decide, and give you my top four. Hilariously, though about seventy percent of what I read is slash, here we have three het fics and one slash. Ah well.

I actually have a very difficult time evaluating things like "favorite" so I am going to reinterpret that as "current strongest obsession". That would be Vampire Diaries, then. (A show, by the way, that is much better than either the title or first few episodes would suggest.)  Despite which, this is actually kind of challenging, for lo: I have a hard time finding fic I really like in this fandom, probably at least partially because its so new, and the rest because I'm really kind of picky about characterization of some of these characters.

That said. Pretty Lies and Dirty Truth by ThreeJays is probably my pick for favorite of what I've read. It's a divergent-style AU that spins off mid season 2, featuring a rather different take on Klaus (and, for that matter, Katherine) than I suspect we'll end up getting, but really, that is not the point of this fic. The point of this fic is the same as the point of most of the fic I read for this fandom: getting Damon and Elena to hook up already. This manages to accomplish it while keeping everyone pretty well in character and really, what more can one ask?

So, a thing people don't know about me is that I really like memes. The reason no one could possibly know this is that I have a degree of lazy that overpowers well nigh all else, and so I never actually do any of those I mean to. But I always mean to start posting more regularly to my lj, and it always strikes me as an excellent way to get into the habit.

I also really like fanfic. Like, a lot. I consume... well, a really kind of frightening amount of it. (I don't write any, alas.) And I always mean to start reccing some, because really, what's the point of reading something you absolutely love and not sharing it with anyone?

Clever observers will notice that I never get 'round to posting any recs either.

So! Then I thought, "I will find a fic rec meme! It will fulfill both my desires!" only, it turned out, I could not find any. So I cried out to [livejournal.com profile] psiten (who has to listen to a lot of my strange complaints) "The internet has betrayed me! Its job is to contain All the Things but it does not contain the Thing that I want!"

And she spake unto me and said, "Dude. I'll make you one if it will stop the complaining." And she did.

Without further ado,
