Thirty Days of Fic: Day 2

01) Something from your very first fandom
02) Something from your current favorite fandom

I actually have a very difficult time evaluating things like "favorite" so I am going to reinterpret that as "current strongest obsession". That would be Vampire Diaries, then. (A show, by the way, that is much better than either the title or first few episodes would suggest.)  Despite which, this is actually kind of challenging, for lo: I have a hard time finding fic I really like in this fandom, probably at least partially because its so new, and the rest because I'm really kind of picky about characterization of some of these characters.

That said. Pretty Lies and Dirty Truth by ThreeJays is probably my pick for favorite of what I've read. It's a divergent-style AU that spins off mid season 2, featuring a rather different take on Klaus (and, for that matter, Katherine) than I suspect we'll end up getting, but really, that is not the point of this fic. The point of this fic is the same as the point of most of the fic I read for this fandom: getting Damon and Elena to hook up already. This manages to accomplish it while keeping everyone pretty well in character and really, what more can one ask?

Deathmatch totals:

Who will win? My bet's on... a three way tie. But I reserve judgment about which series at this time.

Oh, c'mon! It doesn't even count as a bet if you're not willing to commit to actual guesses!

I never gamble, remember?

Bah. You're in almost as good a position as I to predict how this shall fall out; you certainly hear me talk about what I'm reading enough.

Look at it as a chance to analyze data!

You are so, so right about TVD. One of the best and best-written shows on television right now, doesn't get enough respect.

And I was so solidly Damon / Elena. I wish Damon would stop killing people...

I had actually totally written it off based purely on Stefan's hair until people on my flist starting doing detailed writeups.

But I'm really growing ever more convinced that show might actually go to the Damon/Elena place, and I have no words for how much joy that thought brings me.

...is it weird that I'm kind of glad he hasn't stopped killing people yet? It's just that so often, in fiction, "falling in love" is presented as though it rewrites your entire character and replaces it with the thoughts and feelings and impulses of of Generic Romantic Hero(ine). I really like that the show's not making it easy, and not trying to pretend that Being In Love makes him a good person all of a sudden. (Incentivizes him to be a better one, yes, but in a way that I suspect shall be long and painful and drawn out.)
